With Love, Meghan never really recovers from its preposterous opening scene of Meghan, dressed in a veiled beekeeper’s space suit, whispering with her apiarist about the wonder of bees.
Enjoyed critique, Megan’s mis-stepping to - B- list social gatherings for me recalls that King Edward VIII abdicated the British throne in 1936 to marry Wallis Simpson, and their subsequent decline to the B-list. Your comments regarding your husband are beautiful. Thank you.
It’s unfortunate to see they ditched a purposeful and elevated platform in the Monarchy. They didn’t know what they had - took the fast money and revealed their mediocrity to the world.
Ironically the Royal family was the best place for them. Pick and choose their projects for doing good without a care in the world about making money. They have proven absolutely nothing by their departure. She was there for only 2.5 years and has already spent four years complaining about it.
Once they fulfill their Netflix deals they need to chill out. By their hasty exit from UK and shortsightedness- they’ve groomed a voracious tabloid fascination that doesn’t appear to be fading.
Holy Moly. The ST article is mind blowing. My favourite detail is the shredded documents left behind in the American embassy in Tehran that were reassembled by Iranian weavers… le Carré eat your heart out.
One thing that really fires up the anti-Sussex lobby in the UK is their abnegation of 'duty'. But despite having burnt their monarchical boats they could make up lost ground by assuming another kind of duty. Ditch the donut-glazing and the desperate socialising and take up some form of out-of-the-limelight service. He's got a good rep with military vets. She knows how to get behind a cause. Perhaps they could build on that. Atonement always plays well.
Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, is known for his philanthropic work, particularly in mental health, veterans' affairs, and conservation, and he has co-founded organizations like Sentebale and The Archewell Foundation to address these issues.
Your amazing husband made me a journalist. I read his Sunday Times avidly from the age of 10 - after noting how keenly my father read it each week. And that's the last word on Meghan Markle-Sussex. The 'Royal pantyhose' observation made me bark-laugh.
Thank you for the loving tribute to your husband Tina. Intimate and moving, and the images of you in the basement alone with papers. Like living in a mystery novel, in love.
Such a lovely tribute to your husband. What a guy!
You’re always spot on with Harry and Meghan. I find the commentary frustrating on social and the news—everyone who loves them just thinks those of us who don’t think they’ve handled things well must think so because we are racist or jealous or both. Could care less about what color her skin is, it’s nothing to do with that.
As an avid reader of VF in its heyday when you were Editor, I decided to pick up The Vanity Fair Diaries and am enjoying it immensely. You have a knack for describing people that often causes me to burst out laughing. And how on earth did you manage so many dinner parties? Anyway, your love for your husband really comes through and I am so glad you continue to honor his memory.
Your husband sounds like he was a wonderful journalist and intellect. Glad his papers are going to a working-class city (as far as I know!).
The Meghan analysis was so trenchant; glad to read it. I am not a fan of hers, but I understand that she was kinda hammered over there (in England). All the same, a Pyrric victory, indeed. Sorry to say this, but I kind of hope she hangs herself. . . .
Your take on the royals is always unerring and entertaining. You’re too right about Meghan. And Sir Harry Evans is truly a hero, and you were the most aspirational couple I knew of… two true gladiators of the modern arena.
Fascinating. I did not realize the Netflix deal was done and they went on with a Oprah for free. “Sloppy seconds”…Wow! Glad Sir Harry’s treasured notes will find a suitable home. 💜
Although it is correct that they did not receive payment for the Oprah special (not for any ethical reason, but because it might breach the Netflix contract), there has been speculation that Oprah is the donor behind a $7.5m grant to Archewell.
Remembering how overjoyed the Black community in the UK were by Meghan’s wedding, I couldn’t agree more that the opportunity to ‘make a Markle’ was thrown away. And in the name of beeswax candles or whatever it is she’s flogging. If I thought she and Harry needed the money, that would be a different matter. Or if some of the Netflix cash was being donated to a cause…
Love it that your husband’s hoard has found a good home!
You are right about the show, but I think you underestimate the role Harry played in their decision to leave the Royals. He always believed his mother had been killed by the press and he saw his wife being attacked constantly by the press. He wanted out as much as she did,

Exactly. She's a fool and really blew it.
As they say here in Texas, trash takes itself out every single time.
What a mean and nasty thing to say.

Look up Invictus Games.

Tina i love the way you write
Not sure any article has ever so eloquently expressed every feeling and disappointment I've had regarding Harry and Meghan post Mexit. Thank you!!!!

it was "Air Bee and Bee" that got me to become a paid subscriber this day

That makes sense. But Netflix still lost the scoop. I just love Tina’s descriptions.
