A life well lived. HB Georgie. What a wonderful village Georgie lives in. What a milestone. He deserves the celebration. Well done. And to you and Izzie - a “perfect” party.

Tina. That is one of the most heartwarming essays I’ve read in a long time and how beautiful to get off politics and things “out there” and just hear you speak from your heart. I’m going to repeat the words you said to my friend Dominick Dunne when he told you of a family tragedy in his life and you said, “ Why don’t you write about it!” (At least that’s what he told me.) You told us here how you turned lemons into an exquisite lemonade. You also did it with a couple failing magazines called Vanity Fair and New Yorker. I hope you saved the photos that I took of you and Harry when Georgie was just a baby for portrait reference for the art I created for your Christmas Card. I see a lot of Harry in him but I see you too. For what it’s worth I was always “different” and my parents didn’t know what to do with me but I think I turned out okay. I love the idea of an underpants party! XR

Not to take anything away from Tina, but The New Yorker wasn’t failing and saying so just makes you sound ignorant.

Robert Risko's avatar

Yes it was. I worked at Condé Nast. It was losing money. Not sure where you get your information.

Two Gazebos's avatar

Oh, you’re equating “failing” with “losing money.”

Well, if that’s your criterion for failure (it’s not mine), the magazine lost tons of money every year that TB was there—but that’s largely because of the self-regarding moron Steve Florio and Si Newhouse, who has to take all the blame for not getting rid of Florio.

I’m well aware of who you are! And I was surprised to see such a high-profile figure use the word “failing” to describe The New Yorker pre-Tina, especially since according to your definition it was a failure while she was there as well. Tens of millions of dollars of losses

I had assumed that you were making the usual knee-jerk >editorial< criticism of the pre-Tina New Yorker. You’re entitled to do that, of course, but just calling it “failing” isn’t making much of a case.
